VS Quarterfinals Underworld vs Avengers

Both of these decks have some big plot twist cards that can change a game. Avengers ones are based on having reservist characters and Underworld’s are all about having characters in their discard pile. Both often end up close to losing only to pull out a huge round and win. It should be an exciting match up.

Next week is the last quarterfinal on the DC side, featuring Green Lantern Corps against Justice League International!

Avengers (AV) go first and then Underworld (UW)

Round 1: AV 50, UW 50
AV plays a resource. UW plays a resource and recruits Tryks for 1. UW attacks directly with Tryks for 1 damage.

Round 2: AV 49, UW 50
UW plays a resource, flips Dracula’s Castle and recruits Werewolf by Night for 2. AV plays a resource and recruits Dane Whitman, Black Knight for 2. UW attacks Black Knight with the Werewolf and they stun each other. Then UW attacks directly with Tryks for 1. Both Dane and the Werewolf recover.

Round 3: AV 46, UW 48
AV plays a resource, flips Avengers Mansion and recruits Rick Jones and Black Widow for 1 and 2 respectively. UW plays a resource and recruits Suicide for 3. AV team attack Suicide with Black Knight and Black Widow. Suicide is stunned and chooses to stun Black Knight in return. Black Widow’s power procs and she stuns Werewolf by Night. Black Knight and Suicide recover. The Werewolf is KO’d.

Round 4: AV 44, UW 43
UW plays a resource and recruits Centurion for 4. AV plays a resource and resource and recruits Iron Man for 4. UW attacks Black Knight with Suicide and AV activates Avengers Mansion revealing 2 reservists and so giving Black Knight +2 atk. The two stun each other. Then UW attacks Iron Man with Centurious and they stun each other. AV attacks Tryks with Black Widow, and UW activates Dracula’s Castle to give Tryks +1 def, although they are stunned anyway. Black Widow does 1 breakthrough damage. Lastly, AV attacks directly with Rick Jones for 1. Iron Man and Centurious recover. Black Knight, Tryks and Suicide are all KO’d.

Round 5: AV 38, UW 34
AV plays a resource and recruits She-Hulk from their resource row for 5. UW plays and flips Gravesite, then recruits Vengeance for 5. AV attacks Centurious with She-Hulk and UW activates Centurious’ power, discarding Nekra to power him up. They stun each other, but AV replaces a reservist to give She Hulk invulnerability so they take no stun damage. AV can’t target Vengeance so just attacks directly with Iron Man and Black Widow for a total of 11 damage. UW attacks Iron Man with Vengeance, AV activates Avengers Mansion to give Iron Man +2 atk. The UW flips Black Magic, moving Tryks from their KO pile to the bottom of the deck and giving Vengeance +3/+3. Iron Man is stunned and Vengeance is not, but AV activates Rick Jones and moves him back to their hand to reinforce Iron Man and avoid the breakthrough damage. UW activates Dracula’s Castle, moving Nekra from KO to bottom to the draw pile and gaining 3 health. She Hulk and Centurious recover and Iron Man is KO’d.

Round 6: AV 34, UW 19
Gravesite activates and both draw and discard a card. UW gains 1 health from that. UW plays a resource and recruits Asmodeus for 6. AV plays a resource and recruits Captain America for 6. UW attacks Captain America with Asmodeus and they stun each other. Then, UW attacks She Hulk with Centurious. AV discards a copy of She-Hulk to power up and UW matches using Centurious’ power to discard Tryks and power up. They stun each other. Finally, UW attacks Black Widow with Vengeance, stunning her and doing 5 breakthrough damage. UW activates Dracula’s Castle, moving Tryks from KO to bottom to the draw pile and gaining 3 health. Captain America and Asmodeus recover. She-Hulk, Widow and Centurious are all KO’d.

Round 7: AV 16, UW 13
Gravesite activates and both draw and discard a card. UW gains 1 health from that. AV plays a resource and recruits Hawkeye and Quicksilver for 4 and 3 respectively. UW plays a resource and recruits Varnae for 7. AV attacks Varnae with Hawkeye and flips Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, giving Hawkeye +7 attack. UW activates Varnae to make him unable to be stunned and since Hawkeye is adjacent to Captain America, he isn’t stunned either. UW attacks Captain America with Asmodeus, flipping Black Magic to do so. AV activates Avengers Mansion so that they stun each other. Asmodeus does 3 breakthrough damage. UW attacks Quicksilver with Vengeance, stunning him and doing 2 breakthrough damage. Quicksilver is KO’d and Captain America recovers. UW activates Dracula’s Castle, moving Nekra from KO to bottom to the draw pile and gaining 3 health.

Round 8: AV 2, UW 11
Gravesite activates and both draw and discard a card. UW gains 1 health from that. UW plays a resource but does not recruit anyone. AV plays a resource and recruits Thor for 8. UW team attacks Thor with Vengeance and Asmodeus, playing Strength From the Grave to give Asmodeus +5 atk. Thor is stunned and chooses to stun Asmodeus in return. UW attacks Captain America with Varnae, flipping Mist Form so he cannot be stunned this attack. Cap is stunned and Varnae does 3 breakthrough damage. It is all up to Hawkeye! AV attacks Varnae with Hawkeye. They activate Avengers Mansion for +3 atk, flip Heroes in Reserve for +3 atk, flip Call the Lightning for +3/+3. This makes Hawkeye 17/8 against Varnae at 15/13. They stun each other and Hawkeye manages 4 breakthrough damage but it is nowhere near enough

End of Game: AV -19, UW -6
This was close. AV took a big lead in Round 5 and then UW struck back hard in Round 6. AV surely would have won in Round 7 except for Varnae’s crazy defensive abilities. They both burned plot twists in Round 8, but UW had too much power. I’m a little sad we don’t get an Avengers vs X-Men matchup in the semis, but hey, UW has played well all tournament.

MVP: Varnae and Iron Man.

Varnae is the best defender in the whole game in my estimation and he single-handedly held of the Avengers in Round 7. Iron Man provides power and versatility to other cards and it was his presence in that lead to Avengers best Round.
